The Division of Natural Science and Mathematics sponsors Merlin G. Smith Science-Mathematics Teaching Assistantships to three entering students each year.Students selected for this program will be designated as Smith Scholars.
Each Smith Scholar will be guaranteed an average of 8 hours per week of work as a teaching assistant in one of the programs of the Division of Natural Science and Mathematics. With a guaranteed minimum of 13 weeks of work in each semester,this would amount to at least 208 hours in one academic year.
Selection will be based on high school record, SAT or ACT scores,and an interview on the Saturday of the Invitational Scholarship Competition with faculty from the Division. Awards will be independent of and in addition to any other financial aid (including scholarships awarded as a result of the Invitational Scholarship Competition).
Dr.Merlin G. Smith, a mathematician and astronomer, was President of Roberts Wesleyan from 1933-1957.The Division of Natural Science and Mathematics is housed in the Merlin G. Smith Science Center.
